Have you ever felt like you were stuck in a hamster wheel, working your way through a never-ending meaningless product backlog? Then you have probably experienced the combination of burnout and boreout

  • Burnout describes working so hard to meet deadlines that you are permanently exhausted, with little opportunity to catch your breath.
  • Boreout describes feeling underutilized and unchallenged, with little sense of purpose or autonomy.

I'm David Morris, coach, instructor, and author of books on Agile Project Management, Scrum, and OKRs. In my work, I am finding more and more teams who experience both overwork and a lack of purpose. In my literature review I've seen some common causes mentioned; however, most researchers describe these conditions as opposites, whereas I am seeing them happen together.

Now I'm researching this phenomenon to hear from people in their own words, on the impact of experiencing burnout and boreout together, how it came about, what they did to cope, and any insights they can share. Join the conversation.
